Using Graduate School Grants to Pay for School

Funding a graduate school education is entirely different than funding an undergraduate degree.  Undergraduate schools offer many different types of scholarships, as well as prime methods to take out loans.  However, by graduation time, many students find themselves owing loans up to $100,000 for their education, which makes the prospect of graduate school unattractive, especially considering the amount of additional funding that may require.   As a result, many graduate school departments offer students grants in order to complete their studies.  Graduate school grants are available to nearly every type of student, providing an attractive method to fund an education.

Regardless of your economic situation, graduate school grants offer funding through their many options pertaining to specific areas of study.  Students in the science-field are often offered graduate school grants in order to continue further research into a particular area.  Science is unique in that many times their grants cover the whole of student’s expenses including tuition.  This is a product of modern technology, since science is constantly looking for evolutions within the industry and thus caters to fresh minds in graduate school.  However, other areas offer similar graduate school grants at all, depending on the school you enroll in.

Aside from school-oriented graduate school grants, there are a slew of other options for graduate school students, stemming from each student’s particular expertise.  The first option to choose from is merit-based grants which look to your performance in undergraduate school.  Most of these grants are based on high grades, obvious participation in extra-curricular activities, and a wide array of volunteer work.  While this may seem impossible throughout undergraduate study, simply joining a few organizations can serve to qualify you for this type of grant.  It may seem difficult to keep your grades at such a high standard, but most students who are striving for graduate school tend to focus on their grades more than average students.

Another typical graduate school grant is offered to minority students around the country.  Each school will have a unique array of minority grants, such as Cornell’s graduate school fellowships for minorities or the American Indian Graduate Center Fellowships.  It is simply a matter of looking out for a university that offers grants which appear most applicable.  One last form of graduate school grants is that which pertains to former military members.  Each division of the military offers a wide spectrum of scholarships and grants for each part of further education: the Army, Marines, Navy, etc.  As part of their education package in return for service, military divisions offer their members many different varieties of graduate school grants and many other scholarships which pertain to higher education endeavors.  Simply looking out for these grant opportunities is a big part of the graduate school process, but with so many opportunities that are now offered, it seems almost impossible to overlook even one prospective grant.
