College students typically don't have a lot of extra money lying around. Sure, there is always that friend that comes from a wealthy family who seems to have a never ending bank account. However, for the rest of us, money is tight during our college years. For this reason, it is imperative that you keep your eyes and ears open for student discounts. They are everywhere if you take the time to look around. Most stores and restaurants near a college campus will offer some sort of discount for students. It makes sense for these shops to cater to their audience. They know that students are looking for bargains and, as smart business owners, they will provide enticing offers to a large demographic that needs to be frugal.
Almost universally, movie theaters offer discounts to students. College-aged people make up one of the largest demographics of moviegoers in the country. Since these people are going to the movies more often than others, it makes sense for movie theaters to cut the price of tickets for students to a more affordable level. The theaters will make up that revenue as students go to more and more shows.
The same discounts can be found at sporting arenas and concert venues. If sports teams can draw in students at lower prices, they can build an allegiance with those customers. Eventually, these students will graduate and move into the workplace. When they are looking to spend their money on entertainment, they will go back to games played by teams with whom they have an allegiance. At this point, they are earning a salary and can afford higher priced tickets.
Restaurants are struggling during this recent economic downturn. Regular working people just don't have the money they used to have to go out to eat. However, college students still seem to be a demographic that will go out for meals. Part of this is because they live in a dorm and want to expand their appetites beyond the dining hall. They also don't cook as much as the working class. Accordingly, many area restaurants will "happy hours" where students can pay reduced prices for regular meals. Or, restaurants will have certain nights designated for students where they have slashed the prices on their menu.
Many colleges campuses will be littered with advertisements from local businesses highlighting the discounts they make available to students. Make sure you bring your student ID card with you and you can enjoy the bargains.
