Business Degrees: Finance

What Will I Learn in a Finance Degree Program?

Finance degree programs are designed to teach students the fundamentals of business accounting, focusing on banks, government agencies, stockholders and suppliers, as well as overall money management. Through a finance degree program, students can expect to take courses that cover essential topics such as budget management, taxation, auditing, regulatory compliance and economics. Students will also be required to take rigorous math courses. Additional classes chosen by the student can include those in business law, technology and banking. Graduates should emerge able to carefully analyze and interpret financial data and guide businesses toward smart financial decisions.

What Can I Do With a Finance Degree?

Those who graduate with a degree in finance will have a wide range of careers open to them in the world of corporate business, banking and government regulation. Common positions in finance include treasurers, mortgage lenders, financial advisers and accountants. Those who get additional education in the field may be able to move into management and supervisory positions, which come with greater responsibility but also greater pay. Finance grads will find that they can pursue careers in fields as diverse as real estate and insurance, and can tailor their degree and their careers to their personal needs and professional goals.

What Is the Career Outlook for Finance Degree Students?

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, work in the field of finance should hold steady through 2018, despite economic downturns. It also notes that the field will be very competitive when it comes to getting top positions, and that earning an MBA can be a real asset. Salaries for those with finance degrees can vary widely depending on the type of work. For example, financial managers working with securities can make upward of $134,000 a year, while someone working as a real estate broker might bring in $60,000.
