What Will I Learn in a Statistics Degree Program?

If data collection and interpretation interest you, then you'll want to seriously consider a career and degree in statistics. Through this degree program, students will learn the methodology used to collect important data for research and understand how to interpret and analyze what it means. Students will take courses in mathematics, statistics theory, data analysis, social science, laboratory science and psychology. If students choose, they can specialize in a particular area of statistics, honing their skills for work in the social sciences, business or hard sciences. Advanced degrees are required for some careers in this field, so students should plan accordingly if they wish to pursue academic or higher level research work.

What Can I Do With a Statistics Degree?

A degree in statistics will prepare graduates to work in just about any field in which they have an interest. Virtually all areas of business, science, social studies, history and health require data to be gathered and interpreted, and as a statistician, you'll be the one to do it. Graduates can work as psychometrists, investment analysts, cryptologists, commodities traders and IRS investigators, among other options. The choices are limited only by the student's interest and education, and a degree in statistics will provide the foundation for career advancement.

What Is the Career Outlook for Statistics Degree Students?

Employment for statistics graduates is expected to grow between now and 2016, though not at a tremendous rate, as demand for the field keeps pace with the number of graduates. Jobs should be available in a wide variety of fields including engineering, software and business, making the degree a fairly safe bet for those who want to pursue a love of mathematics and information. Salaries for statisticians increase in accordance with experience, with entry level workers being paid about $49,000 a year and those with 20 years or more in the field almost doubling that amount.
