What Will I Learn in a Corrections Degree Program?

You can work to improve the corrections system by pursuing a degree in corrections. Studying for this degree will teach you about correctional treatment, maintaining security and processing criminals. You'll learn about regulations, security procedures and institutional policies. You will develop skills in hostage negotiation, social disturbance management, dangerous confrontation, weapon disarming as well as riot and crowd control. Typical courses included in a corrections degree program include victims of crime, the courts, criminal law, offender treatment, law enforcement, criminology, criminal justice, probation and criminal procedures. As part of your degree program, you will gain practical experience in actual correctional facilities.

What Can I Do With a Corrections Degree?

This degree will typically lead to a career as an officer in a correctional facility. You will be responsible for overseeing individuals awaiting trial in a detention facility or working with a jail population. This is a hazardous career, with one of the highest rates of nonfatal on the job injuries. You'll maintain security and accountability, preventing escapes, disturbances and assaults. In addition to correctional facilities, you may also find work in a courtroom as a bailiff or marshal.

Corrections degree students will enter a field that is experiencing average growth with good job opportunities. There is an increasing demand for correctional officers, as the population and rates of incarceration continue to rise.
