What Will I Learn in a Law Degree Program?

Law degree programs such as the juris doctor (JD) are designed for students who want to practice law in the United States, and they are the most popular legal program for law students. These programs will prepare you to work as an attorney with courses that include law and ethics, public interest, legal writing, civil litigation, torts, criminal law, regulation and patents. In a typical three year degree program, your first two years will be primarily focused on general and elective course work, while in your third year, you will most likely get practical experience in a law firm or law clinic that can teach you about your specific area of interest in the legal field.

What Can I Do With a Law Degree?

A law degree usually leads to a career as a lawyer. Attorneys can specialize in many different fields, such as environmental, family, bankruptcy, intellectual property, insurance, probate, criminal or civil law. You may decide to work for a law firm or create your own practice. Some lawyers may also consider working as an in-house counsel for corporations and other organizations, functioning as an adviser on legal issues that the organization faces. Depending on the type of work you choose to do, you may spend most of your time in an office or a courtroom.

What Is the Career Outlook for Law Degree Students?

People will always have a need for qualified lawyers who can understand, act and advise on the law. Attorneys will enjoy a stable career with employment growth that is about as fast as average. Job competition is intense, especially in high powered firms. Law jobs are subject to swings in the economy, as hiring, litigation and other factors that improve the job outlook for lawyers are typically put on hold when budgets are tight.
