Design Degrees: Architecture
What Will I Learn in an Architecture Degree Program?
Study the work of architecture masters of the past and present and learn to create your own great buildings through an architecture degree program. Students can expect to spend a great deal of time modeling and drawing their own ideas, as well as studying the properties of materials, engineering and architectural history. Classes will include mathematics, art history, visual arts, architecture theory, project planning, urban planning, landscape architecture, construction, computer aided design and materials. There will also be opportunities for students to take electives, many of which can help tailor a degree to specific interests such as sustainable design, historic preservation and construction. An architecture degree program should give students the knowledge necessary to build, renovate, design and maintain a wide variety of structures.
What Can I Do With an Architecture Degree?
There is a wide variety of career options open to those with an architecture degree. Some students will go on to work in architecture firms, designing simple and eventually more complex buildings as they gain more experience and confidence. Others will choose to focus on urban design, green building or engineering. Graduates of architecture programs should be aware, however, that very often a master's degree is required to get positions at top firms and to work as an independent designer. Many graduates will also be required to complete additional training after they've earned their degree before becoming licensed architects.
What Is the Career Outlook for Architecture Degree Students?
The field of architecture is expected to see faster than average growth in the coming years, as new buildings to live and work in are required by those moving to previously rural areas, and as the population ages and requires more health care facilities. Some of this growth could be offset by the increase in work being sent to overseas architectural firms, something that new architecture grads should note. Those who have a knowledge of green design, are especially creative or innovative, or who have a lot of experience will have the best chances of finding employment.
