What Will I Learn in a Film Degree Program?

From blockbusters that appear on the big screen to short training videos for corporations, film directors, producers and editors help create the moving pictures we watch. By pursuing a degree in film, students can learn the skills necessary to work in this dynamic and creative field. This means taking courses in cinematography, film history, computer editing, communication, drawing, sound effects, lighting, set design and costume design. By graduation, students should have learned the basics of planning, directing and shooting a film as well as some of the business and postproduction essentials. Because film is such a broad career, most students will pick a specialization such as editing, sound, directing or production.

What Can I Do With a Film Degree?

When most people think of film degrees, they picture themselves working in glamorous far-flung settings, directing and producing big films. Although some film students will undoubtedly rise to great heights on the Hollywood scene, the vast majority will take on other jobs behind the scenes. Smaller films, educational productions and niche movies all need directors, editors and producers too. For those with an interest in film and an interest in writing, film criticism and journalism are also viable career options. With additional education, a film degree can also be useful in teaching, research and library science.

What Is the Career Outlook for Film Degree Students?

The job prospects for film majors can vary quite a bit. For those who want to pursue creative outlets, often other jobs outside of film are required until breakthroughs with studios and financial backers can be made. Those interested in lower-profile pursuits such as editing, processing and working behind the scenes will have a much easier time finding employment. Jobs such as camera operators and video editors will be in the highest demand in the coming years. The average salary for a camera operator is $41,000 a year, and film and video editors earn on average $50,000.
