What Will I Learn in a Photography Degree Program?
From fashion shoots to war reporting, photographers help us document the world around us. In a photography degree program, students will learn the basic technical and artistic skills needed to take impressive photos. Generally, photography students will take a series of courses that challenge them to be creative while exploring new ways of taking, developing and manipulating photographs. Courses will include art history, drawing, design, electronic imaging, visual communications, commercial photography, fine art photography, media studies and film. Students should emerge able to work in fashion, news, fine art and advertising with a large collection of high quality images in their portfolios.
What Can I Do With a Photography Degree?
Because nearly every business and industry out there uses photography, there is a wide range of careers open to those who earn a degree in photography. For some, taking fine art photography images will be the right path. For others, commercial photography for advertisements, stock photography and publishing will be a better option. Other careers for photography degree graduates include teaching, fashion photography, news photography, wedding photography, portrait photography and photo supplies and technology. Students should keep in mind that while owning your own studio can be great, it can also be very expensive as photography equipment is costly.
What Is the Career Outlook for Photography Degree Students?
Competition for jobs in photography is pretty tough most of the time, even when the market is supposed to be good for new grads. Because the degree is popular with so many people, and many are very talented, grads must work hard and build an impressive portfolio to get the best jobs in the field. Grads should also keep in mind that the industry is trending toward more and more freelance work, making salaried positions harder to find. An in-depth knowledge of the latest technology and techniques will be a real asset to any students job hunting in this field.
