Meet a Higher Education Administrator: Eric Stoller

Eric Stoller, a blogger for Higher Ed and a consultant specializing in strategic communications and engagement, has a wealth of experience as a university administrator. He now works mainly with other administrators and universities as a consultant. His inspiring blog and publications about higher education showcase his leadership skills and his ability to understand students and their needs. In the video above, Stoller answers our questions regarding his career path, education and projects. He explains how he has reached his goals and aspirations through hard work, networking and experience in student affairs issues. With an undergraduate degree in public relations and communications (in addition to a minor in marketing) and a master's degree in college student services administration, Stoller explains how his education taught him to communicate with leaders, to solve problems and issues related to student affairs, and to network with a variety of individuals in education and other industries.

He also discusses some college courses that were particularly helpful to him, such as graphic design, organizational design, business administration, student development and even philosophy. Stoller explains that good networking skills are essential to advancing your career and getting work that interests you. Although he had no "linear career path" in mind, Stoller has relied on his network for advice and support. He also explains that "listening, empathy and thinking strategically" are some of the most important skills for a university administrator to possess. Stoller plans to be a consultant for a while, but he says he may be interested in pursuing a career as an associate dean or a director of communications for a university in the future. To find out more about Stoller and his career endeavors, be sure to visit his blog.
