What Will I Learn in a Human Services Degree Program?
In studying for this degree, you'll learn how to help people through health and human services. This program will teach you about behavioral sciences and give you an understanding of the public and private sectors within human services. Some of the topics you'll cover as part of this degree include psychology, planning and human services policy. You can choose to specialize in a certain area of study, such as organizational management, administration, human services management or child services. Upon completion of this degree, you'll be prepared to work in the public and private divisions of human services.
What Can I Do With a Human Services Degree?
Professionals with this degree will find work as an integral part of the health and human services system. A human services degree is valuable, as it will qualify you for management positions in a nonprofit organization or social services agency. You may work directly with populations in human service organizations or in social work. There are also positions available as program managers and organizational leaders in human services.
What Is the Career Outlook for Human Services Degree Students?
The most common path for graduates with a degree in human services is social work, and that career has a bright future. Employment for social workers should grow faster than the average for all occupations through 2018, and job prospects should be good. You'll find that positions are especially plentiful for workers who offer specialization in aging, or who are willing to work in rural areas. The fastest growing group of social workers are medical and public health ones, a specialty that should grow about 22 percent by 2018. There is a wide range of salaries for social workers and those with a degree in human services, but generally you can expect to be paid $22,000 to $74,000 a year.
