Modern Languages
What Will I Learn in a Modern Languages Degree Program?
Students who would like intensive study in a foreign language would enjoy a modern languages degree program. Modern languages programs are commonly offered in French, Spanish, German, Chinese and Japanese. Your course of study will provide you with knowledge and skills in speaking, writing, listening and reading in a particular language, while at the same time teaching you about that language's literature, culture and history. Many modern languages degree programs will encourage students to study abroad to enhance their language understanding, so this course of study may allow you to enjoy overseas travel and become a part of a culture other than your own.
What Can I Do With a Modern Languages Degree?
A modern languages degree opens us many opportunities. Common career paths for those who have graduated with a degree in modern languages include interpreter, reader, foreign service officer, teacher, diplomatic service member and international business staffer. Most modern languages students will pair their major with a minor that is complementary to the study of language, and can provide a good career for the future. Complementary minors will typically include English, journalism, ESL, psychology, education, linguistics, social work and comparative literature. Modern languages can also be an asset in banking, law and publishing.
What Is the Career Outlook for Modern Languages Degree Students?
Because there are so many different careers you can pursue with a modern languages degree, your job outlook will vary. The most common positions for modern languages students are interpreters and translators, and this field offers very good prospects. You will enjoy employment options that are growing at a much faster rate than average, and good demand for the right specialties, particularly frequently translated languages. Demand for interpreters and translators is fed by the broadening of international ties and the rising number of non-English speakers in the United States, and these trends should not slow down. Job prospects for interpreters and translators will be the best in large urban areas, but smaller communities may have good job opportunities as well, and some translators or interpreters can work remotely from anywhere. For the most part, translators and interpreters will earn a salary of $22,000 to $80,000.
