What Will I Learn in a Music Degree Program?

As you develop your passion and career in the field of music, you may find that you want to further delve into an area of specialization within the field. A music degree program will allow you to do that, offering academic study in a number of subjects. Students in this type of program can focus on music composition, conducting, performance or other areas of specialization, studying subjects including music pedagogy, history and theory. Some students will include a sub-specialization, such as focusing on one particular instrument or period of time in music history. As you complete your music degree, you will typically be expected to perform at least one recital as well as deliver a lecture for the recital.

What Can I Do With a Music Degree?

With a degree in music, there are a number of different career paths you can follow. Many students will become professional musicians, working as performers. Others will pursue careers as composers as well as conductors. This degree will also qualify you for work as a music teacher in higher education, so you may want to take what you've learned to a university, college or conservatory. Unless you would like to work in a research position in the educational field, most students of music do not pursue further education. The doctor of musical arts is available for those who are interested, however.

What Is the Career Outlook for Music Degree Students?

Music degree students will likely enjoy a stable career. Employment for musicians, singers and related workers should grow as fast as average through 2018, at a rate of 8 percent. Although employment is healthy, musicians will face tough competition. Those who have skills in multiple instruments and styles can expect to do the best. Self-employed musicians will not do as well as others, so for the best results musicians should plan to find employment through some sort of organization. With work as a music director or composer, you can expect to earn $17,000 to $107,000 a year.
