What Will I Learn in a Theater Arts Degree Program?
Students who would like to work in the theater will enjoy this degree program. You will undertake a comprehensive curriculum that includes theater management, history, performance skills, dramatic literature, theory, technology and design. This degree program is designed to prepare you for work in the theater, whether it's professional or community, on or behind the stage. Courses that are typically offered include stagecraft, imagination, performance, makeup for the stage, voice, movement and acting. Your area of specialization in theater will largely determine the classes you take.
What Can I Do With a Theater Arts Degree?
A degree in theater arts is valuable for students who wish to pursue work as producers, actors and directors. You will work as part of productions in theaters, TV studios and film production facilities. Your work may include dramatic plays, television roles, training films, advertising or film parts. Additionally, many who choose to pursue work in this field will take on extra jobs, such as teaching in high school or university drama departments, public programs and other educational resources. Work for the theater and other dramatic settings is often short term, with long and irregular hours, but many people find it very rewarding.
What Is the Career Outlook for Theater Arts Degree Students?
This field offers employment that should grow about as fast as the average for all occupations through 2018 and perhaps beyond. Jobs may be difficult to secure because of intense competition, but there will always be some available, as many workers will leave the field early and leave positions open for new talent. Live entertainment positions tend to do well, including theme parks, touring productions and theaters. Actors will often earn hourly wages ranging from $9.81 to $28.72. Producers and directors can find work that offers an annual salary of about $42,000 to $105,000.
