Nevada is well-known as a state where "anything goes." That may be true with regards to the state government's policies toward business. Nevada has no income or capital-gains tax for individuals or corporations, the 15th-lowest property taxes, and the second-lowest number of government employees. Nevada also ranks fairly high in several categories important for future innovation, including the export focus of its manufacturing sector, the productivity of its manufacturing sector, number of patents issued, and the electronic sophistication of its healthcare system. Nevada's per capita personal income is $38,578, making it 19th in the U.S. The median household is higher at 51,434, based on 2009 estimates. According to U.S. News, Nevada is one of the 7 Best States to Start a Business.
Most of Nevada's residents reside in the Las Vegas-Paradise-Pahrump metropolitan area. This area had an estimated population of about 1.9 million, according to a 2009 U.S. Census. This area hosts many of Nevada's top businesses and offers a wide array of job opportunities. Carson City is Nevada's state capital. The top employer in Carson is the government, followed by education services, healthcare, retail, and casinos.
The state of Nevada has hit a rough patch in recent times, due to the impact of the recession. The state's tourism industry has been adversely affected because of the effect the economic turmoil had on tourism to Las Vegas. Also, the value of occupied homes has decreased to 34.1%, the worst in the nation. Add an unemployment rate of 14.4% (highest in the country) and you have a struggling economy. While Nevada's economy is still recovering, the resort areas continue to flourish. The casinos constantly attract tourists from around the world. In 2007, the state raked in $12 billion in gambling revenue, according to the Bureau of Economic Analysis. Students in this area should major in Hotel Management, Communications, and Human Resource.
Nevada has several public and private colleges and universities. One of the most lauded institutions in the state is University of Nevada – Reno, a largely research institution University founded in 1874. The university is home to the Donald W. Reynolds School of Journalism, which has produced a total of six Pulitzer Prize winners. Other prominent schools in the area are University of Nevada-Las Vegas (UNLV), Nevada State College, Truckee Meadows Community College, and University of Southern Nevada.
