What Will I Learn in a Chemistry Degree Program?
Mixing elements and developing products can be part of an exciting career as a chemist, and getting there requires completing this degree program. Students will examine the molecular world, studying the periodic table, understanding reactions, and learning how compounds bind, combine and work. Students can expect to take courses in mathematics, various kinds of chemistry and materials science. In addition to the skills they learn in the classroom, students will be challenged to apply what they've learned in a laboratory setting. Most chemistry degree students will choose an area of specialization. Common choices include biochemistry, polymer chemistry, physical chemistry and inorganic chemistry.
What Can I Do With a Chemistry Degree?
There is a wide range of careers open to students who earn a degree in chemistry, and graduates will find that opportunities differ depending on their level of education and type of specialization. Those who have basic training in the field will be able to find work as lab assistants and quality analysts. Others may find work as pharmaceutical sales reps. A higher level degree will open up more doors for grads, allowing them to work in research chemistry, education or product technology, or as biochemical engineers, medical chemists, material scientists and molecular chemists. As in many other fields, attaining a master's or doctoral degree will help you find additional career opportunities and provide room for advancement.
What Is the Career Outlook for Chemistry Degree Students?
Job security and opportunities in the chemistry field will depend largely on the specialization a grad chooses. Those who focus their education on pharmaceutical development and medical chemistry should find their employment outlook very promising. Additionally, those with an in-depth knowledge of technology will also find ample opportunities. Job growth in this field is expected to be slower than average, but new chemists will always be needed to create beneficial compounds. Earnings for chemists can vary widely, but the average is about $56,000 a year.
